StudioPress Announces Genesis Theme Framework

I’ve been working with the StudioPress team for close to three years now since the creation of the original Revolution Theme and I have to say I have never been more excited than I am today.   For a few months now I’ve had the privilege of trying out the various builds of their new ultimate creation, the Genesis theme framework, which combines the core code of their various themes, making it easier for users to upgrade as new versions of their theme framework is released.

Like all good theme frameworks, the Genesis theme uses child themes and hooks so users can make adjustments to the design without hacking any of the core theme code making for a flawless transition and helping you avoid having anything break (or losing changes) on your updates!

Here are the features listed so far for the Genesis theme framework:

  • 6 Site Layout Options + Child Themes!
  • More than 30 hooks and growing!
  • Huge Backend Theme Options Panel
  • Focus placed on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Loads of Custom Widgets

As of launch, there are currently a few child themes already available with many more in the works.  In fact, I believe eventually all of their popular existing designs will be released as child themes as well for the Genesis framework.  But before showing you those, here is the plain core Genesis framework design which features a large control panel allowing you to custom your layouts:

Builder Theme: The Ultimate Business WordPress Theme

When it comes to flexibility, the iThemes team has built a strong reputation with their popular Flexx blog theme, and now they are back at it again, this time attempting to offer the ultimate business WordPress theme.  And when I say ultimate, I mean it.   In addition to offering a theme framework and several child themes, the Builder theme also offers multiple layouts (each using its own CSS), the ability to easily create custom widgets, and even allows you to custom build special landing pages, squeeze pages, email opt in pages, feed pages, portfolio pages, all with one single design!

Here is a demo of what you get with the Builder theme:

New Elemental WordPress Theme Framework

Although premium WordPress themes have really taken off over the past couple years, they certainly aren’t for everyone.   Based upon your personal needs, you may have need for a custom WordPress theme.   For these people I always recommend they look into one of the various theme frameworks available, which offer a great foundation to start building your own custom WordPress theme.

One of the newest frameworks, which also happens to be one of my favorites, is the new Elemental framework.   This new theme framework has a small fee associated with it, but you start out with all of the functional pieces of your website already finished.  This means you can instead focus on customizing the design to suit you or your clients needs.

Here are the features listed for the incredible Elemental theme framework:

  • Stacks of Filters and Actions to increase child theme customization potential
  • 12 custom page templates which let you create contact forms, sitemaps, image galleries, blogrolls and much more with ease
  • Complete breadcrumbs support, site wide
  • Auto-resizing thumbnails, and the ability to automatically grab thumbnail images from the post content (custom fields not required!)
  • A built in contact form with user definable email address, messages, and CAPTCHA to reduce spam
  • Support for the WP125 advertising plugin for full control of the adverts on running on the blog
  • Elegant, animated, multi-level drop-down menus for pages and categories
  • Code to prevent content redundancy across the site – no 2 posts will appear simultaneously
  • Print-friendly options on single-post pages
  • Four widgetized regions with optional advertising
  • Support for Gravatars, author comment highlighting, threaded comments and paged comments
  • Print.css stylesheet

Thesis Team Releases New Version 1.5

If I only ran one WordPress website and was looking for a new premium WordPress theme, the theme I would probably give the highest consideration to is the Thesis theme framework.  With this theme framework, you can get the foundation for your site, then customize it to look and operate how you want it to using the unique control panel included with the theme.

Here are a few features that are listed by the Thesis team:

  • SEO: the degree to which your code and content are organized and optimized for both search engines and people
  • Accessibility: your ability to reach different audiences—those with special needs, people using alternative Web browsers, mobile users, etc.
  • Usability: how effectively your users are able to navigate and interact with your site
  • Flexibility: how easy is it to get the look you want by providing rich markup for styling and customizations via a control panel
